The Department of Agriculture (DA) officials, led by Secretary Francisco P. Tiu Laurel, Jr., recently paid a visit to the Smart Greenhouse-Philippines Project (SGPP) at the DA-Bureau of Plant Industry Baguio National Crop Research Development and Production Support Center (BPI-BNCRDPSC). This project, jointly implemented by the DA-BPI-BNCRDPSC and the DA-Cordillera Regional Field Office (RFO), aims to enhance productivity and produce high-quality tomatoes through the implementation of smart technologies.
The SGPP is a significant step forward in the agricultural sector, as it focuses on research and development, technology transfer, and training/capacity building of farmers. By leveraging smart technologies, the project aims to improve the overall efficiency and sustainability of greenhouse farming practices. With the support of the Government of the Republic of Korea through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the Korea Agency on Education, Promotion and Information Service on Food, Agriculture, Fisheries, and Natural Resources (EPIS), Info Valle Korea Co., Ltd., and Shinhan A-Tec Co., Ltd., the SGPP is set to benefit the Cordillera people.
One of the key objectives of the SGPP is to enhance productivity and quality in tomato cultivation. With the integration of smart technologies, such as automated climate control, precision irrigation systems, and data-driven monitoring, farmers can optimize their tomato production. In addition to tomato cultivation, the SGPP is also involved in two ongoing research projects. The first project focuses on the performance evaluation of different strawberry varieties/entries. This research will contribute to the development of strawberry farming practices, enabling farmers to make informed decisions and maximize their yields.
The second ongoing research project at the SGPP revolves around evaluating different propagation techniques to produce quality plant materials.
